Types of Products Used
BOTOX®
The first anti-wrinkle injectable on the market. It gained FDA certification in 2002. In addition to smoothing wrinkles, Botox® can also be used to treat excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) in the armpits, hands, and feet.
Botox is formulated using a protein casing. Although its results are incredible, this casing can cause rare immune reactions. Nevertheless, new brands entered the market offering different formulas and benefits.
JEUVEAU®
This “new kid on the block” was approved exclusively for cosmetic use in February 2019.
You may recall the splashy launch party that branded Jeuveau (i.e. prabotulinumtoxinA) as “#NEWTOX.” Maker Evolus is hoping the newbie will prove to be a worthy competitor to Botox, with a price point 20 to 30 percent less than Botox
Trials have shown Jeuveau to have a similar safety and efficacy profile to Botox. Patients generally begin to see results in three to five days, and they last for three to six months.
Jeuveau may be a better option if you’re new to botulinum toxin injections and are looking for a cheaper option to start.
XEOMIN®
Xeomin was FDA-approved in 2011 and has thus gained popularity as the “naked” choice. Why? It only contains one ingredient: botulinum toxin type A. Without any additives, XEOMIN is the purest injectable available.
Some patients develop a resistance to Botox or Dysport due to certain antibodies so XEOMIN is a reliable alternative. It’s also less likely to spark any allergic reactions. The only downside to XEOMIN is that it can be slower to show results – up to 4 days.
WHAT DO BOTOX®, JEUVEAU, AND XEOMIN® HAVE IN COMMON?
If you’re looking to slow down the signs of aging, all three of these neurotoxins will do a great job. All three of these injectables temporarily improve the appearance of both mild to severe frown lines between the eyebrows and fine lines around the eyes (crow’s feet). In addition, they smooth the skin by blocking nerve impulses and helping muscles relax.
While they’re all designed to solve similar skin concerns, they have their differences. All three are produced by different manufacturers and have unique formulas. This affects their longevity, dosage, application techniques, and other factors.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do before my appointment?
If possible, please don’t wear makeup.
If you are receiving an injectable treatment and are on blood thinners including aspirin, plavix, warfarin, advil, motrin, vitamin E, ginkgo biloba, or St. John’s Wort, please consult your physician or call our office for a review of your medications and advice on if you should discontinue these temporarily prior to your procedure.
What is a neurotoxin and how is it different than Botox?
Botox is a type of neurotoxin, just like 7up is a type of soda. We offer 3 different neurotoxins at Complete Wellness: Jeuveau, Botox, and Xeomin. All three neurotoxins are derivatives of botulinum toxin and are used to treat fine lines and wrinkles.
What’s the difference between neurotoxins (“Botox”) and fillers?
Neurotoxins and fillers are both injectable treatments that address some of the same issues including fine lines, wrinkles, skin laxity, and so on. Fillers inject a substance under the skin in order to add fullness and “fill” wrinkles and creases. Neurotoxins prevent the release of chemicals that regulate muscle contraction, which relaxes the underlying muscle and results in a softening of the features.
How do neurotoxins ("Botox") work?
Neurotoxins are a form of botulinum toxin type A that is injected into targeted treatment areas using an ultra-fine needle. It works by blocking the nerve signals needed for facial muscles to contract. It’s the repetitious contraction of facial muscles that causes expression lines and wrinkles. Once injected, the neuromodulator relaxes the muscles and decreases their movement to reduce the appearance of lines or wrinkles in the area. You will see your results gradually over 3-7 days following injection.
What areas of the face can be treated with neurotoxins?
Neurotoxin can be used to address lines and wrinkles on a number of different facial areas, including the forehead, eye area (crow’s feet), and lip lines. It may be injected to soften dimpling of the chin. Neurotoxin can also be injected into the muscles of the jaw to help alleviate pain from teeth grinding or TMJ or for a jaw slimming effect. Some of these treatment areas may be considered off-label.
What is a dermal filler?
Hormones in your body deplete as you age, leaving skin creased, sunken, and droopy. Dermal fillers are injectable treatments that replace the hyaluronic acid your body produces naturally. Treatment with fillers encourages collagen production, which is the basis for younger, firmer skin. Dermal fillers smooth wrinkles and add lost volume to the face.
We offer several formulations of dermal fillers, each of which is meant to address a specific beauty issue on various parts of the face. Each product is composed of stabilized hyaluronic acid (HA) which occurs naturally in the cells of the skin. Depending on the type of filler used, results can last from 1-2 years.
What are the benefits of fillers?
As we age, we lose volume in key areas of the face. This contributes to folds, wrinkles, hollow temples, thinning lips, sunken eyes, and an older appearance to the face. Fillers can be used to restore this volume loss, smooth out folds and wrinkles, and improve contours to achieve natural results without altering facial expression. Certain fillers can also be used to correct scars.
